The Kilt Rock is so named as it has the appearance of a kilt. It is formed of vertical black basalt columns (the folds) with intruded sills of dolerite (forming the tartan pattern). Should be viewed looking North from the car park by the waterfall (NG 508 655) at Ellishadder.
