Bonnie Prince Charlie (Charles Edward Stuart 31 December 1720 to 31 January 1788) was the exiled Jacobite claimant to the thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland. After his defeat at the Battle of Culloden on 16th April 1746 his subsequent flight has become the stuff of legend. Helped by loyal supporters, such as Flora MacDonald, he was helped to escape his pursuers on the Isle of Skye by being disguised as an Irish maid, “Betty Burke”, this is commemorated in the popular folk song “The Skye Boat Song”.
