The Battle of the Braes was fought in 1882 between local crofting families and 60 policemen (50 of whom where from Glasgow). The dispute was over the Clearances and grazing rights. This was the last battle fought on British soil. This battle, and other incidents on the island, led to the setting up of a Royal Commission and to the Crofters’ Holding Act of 1886.
