Ashaig is a site of a former ferry crossing and a Christian sanctuary. St Maolrubha made his home here, he preached on a rock on the north bank of the river, this rock is known as pulpit rock.

Ashaig is the site of an early Christian (6th 10th C AD) holy well, supposedly with healing properties.
